  • A DUI conviction can affect you and your family in many ways, including license suspension, fines, higher insurance rates, mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device, and jail time.

What is an Ignition Interlock License, and how can I get one?

An Ignition Interlock Licenses is a new type of restricted driver's license.  If you happen to lose your driver's license because of a DUI or Physical Control conviction or after an administrative hearing under RCW 46.20.308, you may be eligible for this restricted license from the Department of Licensing.  This includes anyone who loses their license for breath or blood test refusals and anyone arrested for Minor Driving After Consuming Alcohol, RCW 46.61.503.

To be eligible for an IIL, your driving record must show that:

You have been arrested for, or convicted of, an alcohol-related DUI or Physical Control.

You have had a valid driver license.

You have a Washington State residence address.

You haven't been convicted of vehicular assault or vehicular homicide within 7 years before the incident for which you are requesting an IIL.

Your current suspension or revocation isn't for, or doesn't include, Minor in Possession, Reckless Driving reduced from an alcohol-related DUI, Vehicular Assault, Vehicular Homicide, or Habitual Traffic Offender.

To receive an Ignition Interlock License you will need to send in an application to the Department of Licensing which can be downloaded at http://www.dol.wa.gov/forms/500023.pdf  There will be a $100.00 fee for the application, as well as a monthly fee to help fund indigent citizens.  You will also need to provide the Washington Department of Licensing with proof of SR-22 insurance.
